education: Pharmacists are responsible for filling prescriptions for patients. A doctorate degree from a program accredited by the Accreditation Council for Pharmacy Education (ACPE) is required. Prospective pharmacists must complete clinical work, including two years of Introductory Pharmacy Practice Experiences and two years of Advanced Pharmacy Practice Experiences, to earn the degree. A license earned by passing the North American Pharmacists Licensure Examination (NAPLEX), is also a required qualification.
demand for this profession: Ashish Advani, PharmD, received his Doctor of Pharmacy degree from the University of Georgia in 2007, after completing his undergraduate coursework at the University of Georgia and Oxford University in England. After graduating, he completed a drug information residency at Mercer University and Solvay Pharmaceuticals, Inc, centered around skills of literature searching, literature evaluation, and medical communication, all in support of the practice of evidence-based medicine. Since then, Dr. Advani has worked as a clinical assistant professor and director of the Drug Information Center at Mercer University College of Pharmacy. In conjunction with the university, he recently founded InpharmD, a website and app that aims to increase the free flow of evidence-based information through teaching and service.
